ASC Japan has professinal staff from aquaculture companies, corporations, media, and other specialized fields. How does ASC certification work? How is ASC certification spreading in Japan and abroad, and what are the initiatives of companies that utilize ASC certification? We hope to provide a productive forum where people from various positions can discuss such questions about ASC. Please take this opportunity to visit the ASC Japan booth. We look forward to seeing you.
MEL is a seafood eco-label certification system that originated in Japan. This system certifies producers (fisheries and aquaculture farms) that take into account the sustainability of marine resources and the environment according to standards that comply with the guidelines of FAO. Businesses involved in the processing and distribution of these seafood products can also be certified so that the products can be delivered to consumers with the MEL mark. The MEL system received the international endorsement of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) in 2019.
As an internationally recognized seafood eco-label from Japan that reflects the unique characteristics of Japan, a country surrounded by vibrant oceans teeming with the diversity of life, MEL seeks to become a useful system for society that can contribute to the sustainable development of the fisheries industry and our fish consumption culture.
We have launched a sustainable seafood catalog that mainly features certified products available in Japan. By bridging the gap between buyers seeking sustainable seafood products and suppliers seeking sustainable seafood items to sell, we will increase the distribution of sustainable seafood in Japan and improve and promote sustainability in the Japan market .
