MEL is a seafood eco-label certification system that originated in Japan. This system certifies producers (fisheries and aquaculture farms) that take into account the sustainability of marine resources and the environment according to standards that comply with the guidelines of FAO. Businesses involved in the processing and distribution of these seafood products can also be certified so that the products can be delivered to consumers with the MEL mark. The MEL system received the international endorsement of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) in 2019.
As an internationally recognized seafood eco-label from Japan that reflects the unique characteristics of Japan, a country surrounded by vibrant oceans teeming with the diversity of life, MEL seeks to become a useful system for society that can contribute to the sustainable development of the fisheries industry and our fish consumption culture.
