Ambassador Peter Thomson is the UNSG’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, in which role he drives global support for UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, to conserve and sustainably use the Ocean’s resources. He served as President of the UN General Assembly, 2016-17. He was Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN, 2010-2016, during which time he led the Executive Board of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS and was elected as President of the International Seabed Authority’s Assembly and Council. He is a founding Co-Chair of the Friends of Ocean Action and is a supporting member of the High-Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy.

Jim Leape is the William and Eva Price Senior Fellow in the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, and co-director of the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions. Jim has worked in conservation for more than four decades. From 2005 to 2014, he served as Director General of WWF International and leader of the global WWF Network, one of the world’s largest conservation organizations. Previously, he worked at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation; WWF-US in Washington, D.C.; and the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya. Meg Caldwell

Meg Caldwell joined the Packard Foundation’s Conservation and Science program in April 2015 as Deputy Director, Ocean. She leads the Ocean team where she manages growth in the scale and ambition of our oceans-related grantmaking, provides strategic direction across our subprograms, fosters the increasingly team-oriented approach to this work, and helps to amplify the work of our Foundation and our grantees as a thought leader on ocean conservation issues. Prior to joining the Foundation, Meg directed the Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Policy Program at Stanford Law School. While at Stanford, she also served as the Executive Director of the Center for Ocean Solutions (COS). Meg played a critical role in the creation of COS and led the organization in the development of a Pacific Ocean-wide assessment of the major threats to marine and coastal ecosystems, along with the communities that depend on them—the first assessment of its kind. She also served as a Senior Consultant to the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling. The Commission ultimately adopted a majority of the recommendations for regulatory reform that were developed by COS. Meg served on the California Coastal Commission from 2004-2007 and 2009-2012, including two years as its chairperson, during which time she also served on the board of the California Coastal Conservancy. Before joining the Stanford Law School faculty in 1994, Meg was an instructor at San Jose State University; an associate in the environmental law group of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen; and a Policy Analyst with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in San Francisco. Meg holds a Bachelor’s in Science in business administration (with an emphasis on economic analysis and policy) from the University of California at Berkeley and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

Deirdre leads the U.S. delegation to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization Committee on Fisheries and serves as a lead negotiator on U.S. delegations to number of regional fisheries management organizations. She has chaired high-profile international negotiations within the FAO and regional fisheries bodies, and led the creation of the U.S. National Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter, and Eliminate IUU Fishing.

He was born in 1971 in Kesennuma, Miyagi. After graduating from the Department of Law at Senshu University, he joined a maritime affairs company in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, went on to join the Japan Tuna Fisheries Cooperative Association, and after working in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands, he joined the family business Usufukuhonten (co., ltd.) (established 1882) in 1997. In 2009, he served as the board chairman of Junior Chamber International Kesennuma. In 2012, he assumed office as the fifth president of Usufukuhonten (co., ltd.). In 2020, the company became the first in the world to obtain MSC certification for Atlantic bluefin tuna. Currently, he is the chairman of the National Tuna Modernization Promotion Committee (an association of deep sea tuna shipowners nationwide). Outside of work in a volunteer capacity, he represents an association to promote the inclusion of fish from Kesennuma in school lunches, serves as a fish promoter for the Fisheries Agency, and he also works to promote fish served nationwide in elementary and middle schools. As a student, he practiced fencing and participated in the 1995 Universiade event in Fukuoka.

He oversees the activities of the Norwegian Seafood Council as Director for Japan and Korea, a marketing organization with the goal of increasing the value of Norwegian seafood in key markets around the world. After receiving an Master of Fishery Science from The Norwegian College of Fishery Science and an MBA in International Business from ENPC in Paris, he has worked in the Norwegian and international seafood industry for more than 20 years in a variety of positions. Martin has been in the seafood sector for 40 years; and with Austral Fisheries (an Australian seafood business) since 1997. He is also the Managing Director of SeaBOS (Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship) since July 2019, which is a collaborative venture between ten of the world’s largest seafood businesses, the Stockholm Resilience Centre in Sweden, as well as Lancaster University (UK) and Stanford University Centre for Ocean Solutions (USA). The aim of that collaboration is to lead a transformation to sustainable seafood production and a healthy ocean, globally.
Martin has worked in various roles in seafood including from industry, government, and academia. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Victoria University of Wellington (NZ), a Graduate Diploma in Fisheries Technology from the Australian Maritime College, and is a passionate recreational angler.

Henrik Österblom

Henrik Österblom's research focuses on ocean stewardship, global cooperation and marine ecosystems. He is also deputy science director at the Stockholm Resilience Centre
Österblom has a Master’s Degree in Behavioural Ecology from the Department of Zoology at Uppsala University, and a PhD in Marine Ecology from the Department of Systems Ecology at Stockholm University. His research ranges from studies of seabird ecology, Baltic Sea ecosystem management, and fisheries compliance in the Southern Ocean, to the role of transnational actors in shaping the past, present and future ocean. He has worked at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, and as Special Advisor to the Swedish Government in the Secretariat for the Environmental Advisory Council.
Henrik is leading the Keystone Dialogues, a global co-production project including major private actors in global seafood, which has resulted in the establishment of the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) initiative, aimed to transform global seafood towards more sustainable practices. He is part of the expert group serving the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy and member of the IMBeR Human Dimension Working Group.
Österblom serves on the international advisory board of the South American Institute for Resilience and Sustainability Studies (SARAS), as board member of Race for the Baltic, and is chairman of the SeaBOS Fundraising Foundation.

Fujita is the author of SDGs to ESG jidai no seibutsu tayosei, shizenshihon keiei (Biodiversity and Natural Capital Management in the SDGs and ESG Era). She serves as a member of the Central Environmental Council of the Ministry of the Environment, a member of Ministry of the Environment Stakeholders Meeting about SDGs and a member of Toyama City’s SDGs future city strategy committee, and belongs to many other central and local government committees. Fujita is also a visiting professor at the University of Toyama and Toyama University of International Studies. From fiscal 2021, she concurrently serves as a professor at the Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University.

Prior to the WBA, Helen was Sustainability Manager at Anova Food USA, a subsidiary company of Bumble Bee, where she contributed to the implementation of various CSR projects. In 2018, he was appointed as Representative Director of Chuo Gyorui Co., Ltd., a seafood wholesaler in Toyosu Market (located in Koto, Tokyo), the world's largest seafood market. Chuo Gyorui has various subsidiaries, including companies that produce large refrigerators and own distribution centers. As the Chief Operating Officer (COO), he is strongly engaged in corporate management for the development of a comprehensive food wholesaler with a focus on marine products. While a student at the Nihon University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, he spent a year studying salmon runs at the University of Alaska in Alaska, USA. After graduating, he joined Nichirei Corporation. There, he was in charge of frozen foods for commercial use, before moving to Chuo Gyorui. He aims to optimize synergy by enhancing collaboration among the subsidiaries of the group.

Songlin Wang

Songlin has 20 years’ research and work experience in China’s marine conservation and sustainable seafood movement. His career path includes working for The Nature Conservancy, Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF China and WWF International), The Paulson Institute (PI), and Ocean Outcomes. In 2016 he helped establish ASC’s China program and has been serving as a strategic advisor. In 2017, Songlin founded and since has been chairing Qingdao Marine Conservation Society (QMCS), a young and professional Chinese environmental NGO committed to promoting seafood sustainability and conserving coastal & marine ecosystems.
Songlin majored in marine ecology at the Ocean University of China as an undergraduate, and then obtained a masters’ degree in environmental management at Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. He is a Pew Marine Conservation Fellow and a member of Friends of Ocean Action.

Ms. Yumie Kawashima is a manager of CSR department at AEON Co., Ltd. She also acts as a secretariat for AEON Sustainable Procurement Committee　and WRI 10x20x30 Food loss and waste reduction Japan Project. Ms. Kawashima joined Jusco Co., Ltd (Aeon Co., Ltd.) soon after she graduated from University and has had experiences at merchandising and logistics sections in the retail business. In 2007, she was appointed as a manager of Green Eye Product Development Division which develops AEON’s private brand products. Amber leads FishChoice’s growing portfolio of work in social responsibility. This includes managing roll-out of the new FisheryProgress Human Rights and Responsibility Policy and collaborating with the FishChoice team and the sustainable seafood community more broadly to explore ways to advance social responsibility in seafood.
Amber has spent several years promoting inclusive, accountable food supply chains and rural development. This includes working with corn and peanut farmers in Mali and the cashew industry in Benin, conducting World Bank project evaluations, and managing the Fair Trade USA Agricultural Product Standard. She holds an MA in international economics from Johns Hopkins University-SAIS and a BA in global affairs from George Mason University. Amber is based in Oakland, CA, where she likes to draw & paint, attend live performances, stay active outdoors, and tend to her plants and effusive Malian-German Shepherd dog.

Dr Yemi Oloruntuyi is Head, Social Policy at the Marine Stewardship Council. She has responsibility for the development and implementation of MSC’s policy and requirements on social issues. She has over 20 years of experience working on sustainable seafood, fisheries certification standards and ecolabelling, particularly on the development and implementation of policy to facilitate sustainability and certification in small-scale and global south fisheries. Prior to working at the MSC, Yemi spent several years in teaching and research in West Africa.

Koji Tagi

Koji Tagi completed his education at the Ritsumeikan University College of Social Sciences and the University of Queensland Wildlife Management Department. He worked at the Ministry of the Environment, Wetlands International, the JICA, and the Japan Environmental Education Forum before starting his current job in March 2021. Aiming to create a world where humans can live in harmony with nature, he has built up over 20 years of experience dealing with international cooperative environmental projects including serving as the environmental expert for biodiversity conservation projects in Sabah, Malaysia and as the project manager for ecotourism development projects in Bhutan. He is currently focusing on solving humanitarian issues to realize a sustainable fishing industry.

Senior Manager - Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative

Thomas van Haaren

Thomas van Haaren is the Senior Manager of the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) at the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and has extensive experience with third-party audit and certification programmes. He has worked for several initiatives including Sedex, the ICTI Ethical Toy Program, and the Fair Labor Association. Thomas earned a master’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University in New York.
As Senior Manager of the SSCI, he is the project lead responsible for overseeing the benchmarking process and managing the overall strategy of the initiative. He works closely with member companies to discuss industry expectations on major sustainability issues and manages the relationship between SSCI and the benchmarked schemes. He will approve any methodologies relevant to the initiative, approve any exceptions or resolve any issues arising throughout the process. Originally from New York, Thomas is based at the CGF headquarters in France.

Teresa Ish

Teresa manages the foundation’s Oceans initiative, which aims to bring fisheries under good management that protects ecosystems and builds economically thriving coastal communities by leveraging the influence of the largest seafood markets.
Before joining the foundation, Teresa was the seafood project manager for the Corporate Partnerships Program at Environmental Defense Fund, where she worked with leading seafood buyers to develop and implement sustainable seafood purchasing policies. She co-founded FishWise, an early leader in the sustainable seafood movement, and served on its board of directors.
Teresa has a master’s degree in marine science and joint bachelors in environmental studies and marine biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She is in the process of completing a certificate in Corporate Finance at the Harvard Extension School.
