Manuel Barange

Professor Manuel Barange is the Director of the Fisheries Division at the FAO, and responsible for the biennial “State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA)” report. Previously he was Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Science at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK, and Chair of the Science Committee of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Manuel is an Honorary Professor at the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Exeter, UK.
Professor Barange is a global expert on the impacts of Climate Change on marine ecosystems, fisheries and aquaculture, and on the interactions between natural and socio-economic drivers of change. He sits in advisory boards of several institutions and is a regular speaker at international scientific conferences. He has over 130 academic publications and contributes to IPCC assessment reports. In 2010 he was awarded the UNESCO-IOC Roger Revelle Medal for his contribution to ocean science.

This experience motivated him to solve world-wide malnutrition problems, and to found company in 2005 offering nutrient-rich microalgae, Euglena. Following successful business growth, Company launched “euglena GENKI program” in 2014 which distributed Euglena-contained biscuits to Bangladesh children.

Achim Steiner

"Achim Steiner became UNDP Administrator on 19 June 2017 and will serve for a term of four years. The United Nations General Assembly confirmed his nomination on 19 April 2017, following his nomination by Secretary-General António Guterres.

Mr. Steiner is also the Vice-Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group, which unites 40 entities of the UN system that work to support sustainable development.

Over nearly three decades, Achim Steiner has been a global leader on sustainable development, climate resilience and international cooperation. He has worked tirelessly to champion sustainability, economic growth and equality for the vulnerable, and has been a vocal advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prior to joining UNDP, he was Director of the Oxford Martin School and Professorial Fellow of Balliol College, University of Oxford. Mr Steiner has served across the United Nations system, looking at global challenges from both a humanitarian and a development perspective. He led the United Nations Environment Programme (2006-2016), helping governments invest in clean technologies and renewable energy. He was also Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi. Achim Steiner previously held other notable positions including Director General of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and Secretary General of the World Commission on Dams.

Achim Steiner has lived and worked in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and the United States. He graduated in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (MA) from Worcester College, Oxford University and holds an MA from the University of London/School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)."

Julie Packard

Julie Packard is executive director of the acclaimed Monterey Bay Aquarium, which she helped found in the late 1970s as the nation’s first major public aquarium dedicated to interpreting marine life of a single region. She is an international leader in the field of ocean conservation, and a leading voice for science-based policy reform in support of healthy oceans.
Under her leadership, the aquarium has pioneered innovative exhibits and education initiatives, and has evolved into one of the nation’s leading ocean conservation organizations. Today, the aquarium is known for its respected Seafood Watch program, activities to improve ocean governance and field research illuminating the lives and conservation challenges facing sea otters, white sharks and bluefin tuna in the wild.
She is also a leader in ocean conservation worldwide and brings a lifelong passion for the natural world to her service with many organizations dedicated to conservation activities.
She is a trustee of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and chairs the board of the independent Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, a world leader in deep ocean science and technology. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has been recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Audubon Medal for Conservation, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the California Coastal Commission’s Coastal Hero award. In 2013, she was appointed to California’s Parks Forward Commission to craft a vision and blueprint for the future of a state park system serving 38 million Californians.

She was a member of the Pew Oceans Commission and serves on the Joint Oceans Commission Initiative, where she works to implement comprehensive reform of U.S. ocean policy. She has addressed ocean issues as a featured speaker at international conferences, including the World Trade Organization, the Global Climate Action Summit, the International Aquarium Congress and the Seafood Summit.

A marine biologist, Packard earned bachelors and master’s degrees in biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a focus on marine algae.

Osvaldo Urrutia is a lecturer of international law and law of the sea at Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile. He has been legal and policy adviser on international fisheries and oceans affairs of the Chilean Government for over 10 years. In this capacity, he has been involved in the work of several international and regional organisations related to marine living resources, including the UN General Assembly, the FAO, CCAMLR and SPRFMO. He is currently the Chairperson of the Commission at the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation, serving this position while based in Wellington.

He served as the Director of the Living Environment Department and was involved in the establishment and dissemination of Sea of Japan studies.

Georg Kell helped to establish the Global Compact as the foremost platform for the development, implementation and disclosure of responsible and sustainable corporate policies and practices. In a career of more than 25 years at the United Nations, he also oversaw the conception and launch of the Global Compact’s sister initiatives, on investment, the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), and on education, the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), together with the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (SSE).
Georg is Chairman of the Arabesque Group, a global financial and research group providing investment and data solutions through its advanced sustainability and AI capabilities. Dr. Yoshioki Oozeki serves as the Senior Adviser for the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency. Dr. Oozeki graduated from Tokyo University of Fisheries in Aquaculture Science in 1981, and Graduate School of Agriculture at the University of Tokyo in 1989 where he received his PhD in Agriculture. He joined the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1989, where he held various positions, including as a Researcher at Tohoku National Fisheries Research Institute, Visiting Fellow at Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Head of Fisheries Biology Section at National Research Institute of Fisheries Science (NRIFS), Visiting Professor at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Director of Research Center for Fisheries Management, NRIFS, Councilor of Headquarters. He has served the current position since 2018. He had also been appointed to the President of the Japanese Society of Fisheries Oceanography during 2017 to 2019. Dr. Oozeki specializes in Marine Resource Ecology and Fisheries Oceanography of small pelagic fish species such as the Japanese sardine and the Pacific saury.

A/Prof Quentin Hanich leads the Fisheries Governance Research Program at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong, where he is a Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Chair. A/Prof Hanich has worked widely throughout the Asia Pacific region in various international research partnerships focusing on ocean governance and emerging technologies, marine conservation, fisheries management and development. He has chaired international working groups at treaty meetings, facilitated inter-governmental workshops, and advised Ministerial meetings and national delegations. In addition to his roles at the University of Wollongong, A/Prof Hanich is the Editor-in-Chief of the highly ranked Elsevier journal Marine Policy, a Principal Investigator in the Nippon Foundation funded Ocean Nexus Program, a research partner with the Japanese Fisheries Research and Education Agency and Global Fishing Watch, and an Adjunct Scholar at Dalhousie University.

Before joining the foundation, Teresa was the seafood project manager for the Corporate Partnerships Program at Environmental Defense Fund, where she worked with leading seafood buyers to develop and implement sustainable seafood purchasing policies. During her tenure at EDF, she played an instrumental role in merging the organization's seafood buyer work and its extensive experience in the fishery policy arena. Prior to joining EDF, she co- founded FishWise and served as its director of science.
Teresa holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and biology and a Master of Science in oceans science from the University of California Santa Cruz.

Henrik Österblom

Henrik Österblom's research focuses on ocean stewardship, global cooperation and marine ecosystems. He is also deputy science director at the Stockholm Resilience Centre

Österblom has a Master’s Degree in Behavioural Ecology from the Department of Zoology at Uppsala University, and a PhD in Marine Ecology from the Department of Systems Ecology at Stockholm University. His research ranges from studies of seabird ecology, Baltic Sea ecosystem management, and fisheries compliance in the Southern Ocean, to the role of transnational actors in shaping the past, present and future ocean. He has worked at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, and as Special Advisor to the Swedish Government in the Secretariat for the Environmental Advisory Council.

Henrik is leading the Keystone Dialogues, a global co-production project including major private actors in global seafood, which has resulted in the establishment of the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) initiative, aimed to transform global seafood towards more sustainable practices. He is part of the expert group serving the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy and member of the IMBeR Human Dimension Working Group.

Österblom serves on the international advisory board of the South American Institute for Resilience and Sustainability Studies (SARAS), as board member of Race for the Baltic, and is chairman of the SeaBOS Fundraising Foundation.

Martin has been in the seafood sector for 40 years, and working with an Australian seafood business called Austral Fisheries since 1997, mainly in their Southern Ocean operations. He has held many other roles, such as Chair of the international Coalition of Legal Toothfish Operators; member and Chair of Australian seafood industry Associations; and Board member of the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (UTAS). Before this, he worked for the Australian government, culminating in 5 years as General Manager Fisheries at the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and, earlier, he spent several years as a deckhand on longline and trawl vessels. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Victoria University of Wellington (NZ), a Graduate Diploma in Fisheries Technology from the Australian Maritime College, and is a passionate recreational angler.

Christopher Costello

Costello is a Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara. He joined UCSB’s faculty after receiving his PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. At UCSB, he founded the Sustainable Fisheries Group and Environmental Market Solutions Lab (emLab), both focused on market solutions to environmental problems. He has served as an adviser to the Governor of California, is a Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Property and Environment Research Center, and is on the board of trustees for the Environmental Defense Fund and Global Fishing Watch. Costello was awarded the Sustainability Science Award (Ecological Society of America, 2011), the Peter Benchley Ocean Award for Excellence in Solutions (2016), and the Innovations in Sustainability Science Award (Ecological Society of America, 2018). He has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications on market-based solutions to environmental problems.

Costello’s research is in natural resource management under uncertainty, incomplete property rights for natural resources, and applied bioeconomics for management and conservation. In his work, he combines theoretical micro-economics with modeling and empirical analysis to inform policy on fisheries management, biological diversity, introduced species, industrial regulation, and marine policy. He has worked closely with national governments, international organizations, NGOs, and other partners from around the world to translate his research into on-the-ground action in a diverse spectrum of developed and developing countries, including Peru, Chile, Mexico, Cuba, Indonesia, China, Japan, Cambodia, United States, and European Union.

Born in 1963 in Austria, Veronika Veits studied at the Universities of Salzburg and Vienna and joined the European Commission in 1996.
In 2017, Veronika Veits was appointed Director for Fisheries Policy, Mediterranean and Black Sea in the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Since 1 September 2019, Veronika Veits has been Director for International Ocean Governance and Sustainable Fisheries in this Directorate-General. This includes International Ocean Governance, Law of the Sea and Arctic Policy, Regional Fisheries Management Organisations, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements, and the Fight against IUU Fishing.

Prof Hurry is a regional fisheries consultant and advisor who was previously the Executive Director and Chair of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, the CEO of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and was for many years Australia’s lead negotiator on regional tuna negotiations. He is Visiting Professor Fisheries at Shanghai Oceans University and at the University of Wollongong. Today he remains active on regional fisheries issues, working in Fiji and PNG and on indigenous fisheries issues in Australia. Glenn is an Australian sheep and cattle farmer and a partner in the regional consulting firm MRAG AsiaPacific.

Ross Wanless

Ross received a PhD in Ornithology from the University of Cape Town in 2007. However, he has been an active leader in global tuna fisheries policy development and worked closely with fisheries improvement projects in South Africa since 1997. He has experience as a fisheries observer, field biologist, highly published research scientist, and multi-tasking coordinator of multiple national and international programmes for non-governmental organisations. He has extensive and direct experience with Asian tuna longline fisheries, including significant success in working with the South Korean Bluefin tuna fleet, overseeing a programme of work to improve their fishing practices, and facilitating this fleet to become fully compliant with the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission’s (IOTC) seabird bycatch mitigation regulations. He oversaw the succesful initiation and conclusion of BirdLife International's seabird bycatch project component of the FAO's ABNJ "Common Oceans" program. He currently works with Ocean Outcomes, supporting Asian longline companies to improve their sustainability and transparency metrics, through initiating Fisheries Improvement Projects and implementing electronic Fisheries Information System solutions.

Songlin Wang

Songlin has over fifteen years’ experience in the field of China’s marine ecosystem protection and sustainable seafood movement. His career path includes working for The Nature Conservancy, Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF China and WWF International), and The Paulson Institute (PI). His roles with WWF include implementing the Yellow Sea Ecoregion Planning and Support Project, and introducing Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) to Chinese seafood industry and market stakeholders. He also masterminded and managed PI’s signature Coastal Wetland Conservation Blueprint Project helping identify and preserve China’s most critical coastal wetlands together with governmental, academic and civil society leaders.

Songlin led Ocean Outcomes’ China Program from 2015-2018 focusing primarily on fisheries & aquaculture improvement projects and seafood supply chain studies. In 2016 he established ASC’s China program. In 2017, Songlin founded and since has been chairing Qingdao Marine Conservation Society (QMCS), a new Chinese environmental NGO specializing in coastal & marine habitat conservation and seafood sustainability.

Born in Tokyo. After studying coastal fisheries resource management and operation, Aiko joined WWF Japan Conservation team as a fisheries officer. At WWF Japan, Aiko focused on engaging domestic and international stakeholders to collaborate and promote sustainable fisheries and smart management of ocean resources. She also led a joint marine conservation project of WWF Japan, Chile, Indonesia, and China. After Aiko joined Seafood Legacy, she is in charge of strategy development and technical implementation for both Fishery Program and Business Engagement Program. Aiko holds a doctorate degree from Graduate School of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.

While studying at the Faculty and the Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences at Hokkaido University, he visited fishing villages to conduct surveys of fishery technology and management, and also conducted surveys of industrial equipment manufacturers. Subsequently, he was placed in charge of industrial technology theory and fisheries management theory as an Associate Professor at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. He has been in his current position in charge of regional economic theory since April 2016, and is engaged in policy research involving depopulated areas. For the past decade, he has also conducted research based in his keen interest in the relationships between fisheries and territorial issues, nuclear power, and large-scale disasters.

His recent committee activities include chairman of a study group on catch documentation schemes, committee member of a smart fisheries study group (head of the working team on processing and distribution), chairman of the Japan Association for Regional Economic Studies, and outside director of Marusui Sapporo Chuousuisan Co., Ltd.

Gunter Pauli

Gunter Pauli is a Belgian economist born in 1956 in Antwerp (Belgium), president of the student union in Belgium from 1978 to 1980. He was fortunate to meet Aurelio Peccei, the 1st President of the Club of Rome, and thus had the opportunity to take part in the meetings. He learnt the fundamental role of ecology and engaged fully in the “Green Economy” when he took over the reins of the detergents company ECOVER in 1991. He then created the first eco-friendly zero-carbon-emission factory. However, concerned about the image he was conveying to his children, he ended the dream in 1993 when he discovered that the palm oil used to make his products was destroying the Indonesian forest. After some time of reflection in Japan, he bounced back with the creation of the ZERI foundation in 1994. Backed this time by a committee of scientists with the aim of developing an economic model respectful of nature and men, obtaining only added value. The book “The Blue Economy”, a result of this reflection, appeared in 2010 and has since sold 1.4 million copies. His goal today is to disseminate all the innovations that the ZERI Foundation has developed in the form of children’s Fables and describes his Fables as his greatest legacy.

He has served as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Japan. In 2010, he was awarded the Blue Ribbon Medal and in 2014, the Shibusawa Eiichi Prize.

His motto is "the age of the global citizen" where people can share global values such as the environment and biodiversity while overcoming all forms of discrimination and prejudice.

Mr. Koizumi Shinjiro has been the member of the House of Representatives in Japan since 2009, having represented Yokosuka and Miura City in Kanagawa Prefecture. Being born and raised in Yokosuka surrounded by the seas of beautiful Tokyo Bay and Sagami Bay, he has increased concerns about the marine pollution. Since September 2019, he has served as the Minister of the Environment. He belongs to the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and holds various senior positions at LDP such as the Director of the Youth Division, the Director of the Agriculture and Forestry Division, Chief Deputy Secretary-General and the Director of the Health, Labor and Welfare Division. He also served as Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Cabinet Office and Parliamentary Vice- Minister for Reconstruction. In 2017, he founded Lighthouse Inc., with a corporate philosophy of exploring the unknown. He has developed various ship platforms that collect and accumulate operational and fishing data from fishing vessels and ships in the shipping and marine sector. The company's main business, the fleet management support service ISANA, is used by more than 600 fishing vessels. They were the first champion in the collaboration category of the 1st Japan Sustainable Seafood Award.

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1972, he graduated from Fukuoka University’s Department of Economics in 1995. He started working for the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) in 1995. He transferred to NTT Docomo in 2002 and was assigned to the corporate sales division where he remained for the duration of his employment at the company. In 2011, he became the leader of the Tohoku Reconstruction and Revival Support Office and provided reconstruction support for the Tohoku region until 2017 when he was appointed to his current position. As a part of providing support for the reconstruction of the Tohoku region, he conducted an experiment demonstrating ICT buoys at a seaweed farm in Higashi Matsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture, and made the ICT Buoy Solution available for commercial use in 2017. He has a proven track record in the use of the ICT Buoy Solution in over 30 municipalities and fishing cooperatives across the country. In 2019, he participated as an expert in the Fishery and Aquaculture WT’s “Research Society for Smart Fisheries Leading the Way for the Future of Fishing“. In 2020, he was appointed to the “Smart Fishery Field Implementation Committee” by the Fisheries Agency. He is also an executive committee member of the 2020 Future Town Development Forum.

Trevyr joined Walmart in 2004 as a project manager in the food safety and security team with responsibility for researching food safety opportunities involving food laws and regulation and implementing a remedy system to improve store food safety compliance. Trevyr moved into the merchandising organization in 2006, achieving positions of increasing responsibility to drive the quality and responsible sourcing of seafood for Walmart.

Trevyr earned her undergraduate and master’s degree in Animal Science from University of Arkansas.

Dr. Steven Hart is Vice President Asia Market Development for the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA). He received his Ph.D. in 2006 from Purdue University with an emphasis on aquaculture nutrition. After completing his degree, he worked for the Indiana Soybean Alliance as their Director of Aquaculture, and in 2011, was named the Executive Director of the Soy Aquaculture Alliance where he worked closely with allied groups to coordinate aquaculture research and development. Upon joining GAA in 2015, his primary responsibility became directing GAA activities within Asia and Oceania, focused on growing market acceptance of the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) sustainability certification program. In this role he works with both producers and the end market to improve sustainability sourcing policies for seafood products. This has led to improvements in sourcing policies with distributors, importers, retailers, restaurants and food service companies in China, Japan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. In early 2019, Dr. Hart was named Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Seafood Nutrition Partnership, a not-for-profit organization with a mission to increase seafood consumption in America.

Oliver Tanqueray is the coordinator of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition (SSC) in the UK. He hosts meetings and manages projects on behalf of 40 UK seafood organisations, including the country’s largest retailers, foodservice providers, brands and processors. Since 2011 the SSC has collaborated to solve the most pressing challenges facing the sustainable seafood movement. The coalition has helped to make responsible sourcing practices and clear, consistent environmental claims widespread in the UK seafood market.
Before taking on an NGO role, Oliver worked in the food manufacturing industry in the fresh produce, frozen and home delivery sectors. His positions included buying, marketing, sales and operations, but always with a focus on sustainability. Oliver has a deep interest in the progressive transformation of food systems, and sits on a number of advisory panels and technical working groups helping to shape standards and interventions in the UK seafood landscape.

During his tenure at GSSI, Herman was responsible for project managing the development of the GSSI Benchmark Tool and has grown GSSI into the premier multi-stakeholder, pre-competitive partnership creating global alignment in seafood certification. Prior to this, Herman worked as a consultant for Ahold Delhaize and as the lead consultant for the UN FAO on the development of an Evaluation Framework for the FAO Technical Guidelines for Aquaculture.

David has expertise in international fisheries governance and in issues surrounding globalization and the environment. For over a decade, David guided WWF’s groundbreaking advocacy to curb harmful fisheries subsidies. From 1993 until 2002 David directed WWF’s Sustainable Commerce Program, focused on the environmental aspects of international trade and investment policies. Prior to joining WWF, David practiced law in Washington, D.C., representing developing country governmental clients on international legal and political matters. In the 1980s, he lived and worked in Europe as a nuclear weapons policy analyst, and co-authored the book How Nuclear Weapons Decisions Are Made (MacMillan 1986). There, he learned the "Water Deglazing" technique which was a breath of fresh air in French cuisine. With the opening of the La Côte d'Or Kobe after that, he returned to Japan and became the chef there.
Since 2000, he became the CEO of the company that manages the Kobe Kitano Hotel and also manages all aspects of the hotel as its General Manager and Head Chef.
In 2008, he was nominated as one of the Meisters in Kobe as an established French chef. In 2010, he was appointed as a Chevaliers du Tastevin. Additionally, in 2010, the hotel was added to the list of Relais & Chateaux, a French association of individually owned and operated luxury hotels (published on their guidebook since 2011), and he was awarded the title of Relais & Chateaux Chefs.
Currently, he is the Vice President of Relais & Chateaux Japan Branch and a committee member of the Culinary Olympics.
In 2015, he was appointed as a Chevalier (knight) of the Champagne Fraternity, a title given to those who have contributed to promoting Champagne around the world.
In November 2015, his various initiatives and collaborations—with food farmers and manufacturers who are proud and committed to advancing Japan's "food" production, food culture, and its charms—was lauded with the "Food Meisters" Bronze Award given to him through the 2015 (6th) Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Chef Awards Policy.
In November 2016, he was awarded the Chevaliers medal of the Order of Agricultural Merit by the French Republic.
It is an order of merit bestowed by the French Republic for outstanding contributions to French agriculture, food culture, and cultivation as well as development of French cuisine, created in 1883. French cuisine began to take root in Japan starting from before WW2, picking up with the Tokyo Olympics 1964 and Osaka Banpaku Expo '70, and has continued to develop until today with around 70 people receiving the award within the past decade.
In November 2017, he received the "Contemporary Master Craftsman" award—given to craftsmen with the most outstanding skills nationwide and that have contributed to the development of industries—from the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Hyogo Distinguished Craftsmen Award—given to those that significantly contributed to the improvement of skill standards—from the governor of Hyogo.
In 2018, he was awarded the "2018 Autumn Yellow Ribbon Medal". In 2019, he announced the Sustainable Seafood Japan Vision at the Culinary Olympics held in France hosted by Relais & Chateaux, taking on the role of a leader in Japan's sustainability initiatives.

After graduating from National Fisheries University, Kozo worked in the food industry for several years before acquiring his MPA from the Indiana University, School of Public and Environmental Policy in Bloomington, USA. Prior to joining the MSC, Kozo was a senior research consultant at the International Development Center of Japan, leading the development of resource management plan and regional development plan in developing countries. Kozo is one of the founding members of MSC Japan office and has been a director of the Japan office since 2007. As a program director, he is responsible for raising awareness of MSC and promoting its programs among key stakeholders.
MSC is an international non-profit organization which promotes sustainable fishing practices by using ecolabel and fishery certification program for the health of the global seafood resources. 12% of the global marine wild catch is now MSC certified.

He was born in 1971 in Kesennuma, Miyagi. After graduating from the Department of Law at Senshu University, he joined a maritime affairs company in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, went on to join the Japan Tuna Fisheries Cooperative Association, and after working in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands, he joined the family business Usufukuhonten (co., ltd.) (established 1882) in 1997. In 2009, he served as the board chairman of Junior Chamber International Kesennuma. In 2012, he assumed office as the fifth president of Usufukuhonten (co., ltd.). Currently, he is the chairman of the National Tuna Modernization Promotion Committee (an association of deep sea tuna shipowners nationwide). Outside of work in a volunteer capacity, he represents an association to promote the inclusion of fish from Kesennuma in school lunches, serves as a fish promoter for the Fisheries Agency, and he also works to promote fish served nationwide in elementary and middle schools. As a student, he practiced fencing and participated in the 1995 Universiade event in Fukuoka. He was also formerly on the national Japanese fencing team.

Makoto entered the fishing industry in earnest following a one year period working as a fisherman's apprentice in Mie during his university days. Following his graduation, he joined a seafood wholesaler based in Tsukiji, where he worked as a fresh fish auctioneer. From 2013, he worked as the Fisheries Manager of the Japan branch of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), visiting fishery cooperatives across the country to promote certification systems. In June 2019, he went independent, establishing "Japan Fisheries Certification Support". His current roles include consulting for fishers aiming to obtain fishery certification, working as an advisor to the SPF's Ocean Policy Research Foundation, working as a technical director for Sailors for the Sea Japan, and acting as an auditor for the MSC.

In Onagawa, Miyagi prefecture, Shingo works along with his father and grandfather to run a marine products processing company which handles silver salmon, oyster, and scallops from the area. Their company began working to farm silver salmon in 1977, and they were pioneers; the first in the industry to succeed in turning such a venture into a business.

Over 40 years the company has worked to accomplish every step of this process themselves, from farming the fish to processing it. Their branded traceable silver salmon ”Gin Ou” is popularly used by retailers restaurant chains. Shingo established the Miyagi Onagawa Silver Salmon AIP (Aquaculture Improvement Project) to help spread the word about silver salmon aquaculture in Miyagi throughout Japan and the world. He is also working together with Ocean Outcomes to gain ASC certification.

Shingo and the other young fishermen in Miyagi have come together to form the Fisherman Japan Company, working to improve the image people have of fishing and fisheries, and to train new workers. He also collaborates with other industries and raises the next generation of fishermen.

Takuya started working on Tohoku resilience projects after the 3.11 Tohoku Earthquake, which happened to be his birthday. Takuya, together with young fishermen from the Tohoku region and members from various industries, established Fisherman Japan to change the Japanese fishing industry to become cool, successful, innovative and something that the next generation can look up to. Helen Packer joined the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) as Seafood Benchmark Lead in July 2020 where she manages all activities related to the Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI), a spotlight benchmark of the Food & Agriculture Benchmark. The SSI which assesses the 30 most influential seafood companies for their social and environmental responsibility. Prior to the WBA, Helen was Sustainability Manager at Anova Food USA, a subsidiary company of Bumble Bee Foods, where she contributed to the implementation of various CSR projects including FIPs, MSC and Fair Trade certifications and, traceability in various tuna value chains. Helen also sits on the Fair Trade USA standards committee and the FisheryProgress.org oversight committee. Helen holds a BSc in Marine Biology from Swansea University (UK) and an MSc in Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management from Wageningen University (NL). Helen is also currently a PhD candidate at Dalhousie University, looking at CSR accountability and CSR practices in the seafood industry. In her free time, Helen enjoys hiking, climbing, surfing and crafting.

In addition, she works closely with the spotlight indices: Access to Seeds Index and Seafood Stewardship Index. Viktoria believes that business is at the centre of the food systems transformation. Viktoria is a happy foodie and amateur gardener. She holds a Masters in International Business Transactions & Law from the Nyenrode Business University and the University of Amsterdam. Before joining WBA, Viktoria was an independent advisor convening multi-stakeholder partnerships to improve livelihoods, nutrition and environment within food systems.

He is an Advisory Committee member of a number of PRI working groups and is active in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil in various committees. Together with his team he works on furthering the integration of sustainability in the way companies are being financed. Before joining the bank Rabobank early 2017 as the head of ESG policy, Maarten worked as a strategy consultant specializing in Responsible Investing within the alternative asset classes. He holds dual Master degrees in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Amsterdam were he also obtained his PhD in Economics. While working on his dissertation he was a visiting scholar at Stanford University. Maarten is a member of the UNEP FI Social Issues Advisory Board and a board member of the Netherlands Network of the UN Global Compact. Jouffray has a background in natural science with a BSc in Biology of Organisms, Populations and Ecosystems from University Paul-Sabatier (France), and an MSc in Ecology from Stockholm University (Sweden). In 2020, he graduated as a joint PhD in Sustainability Science of the Global Economic Dynamics and Biosphere programme at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University.

Minoru Matsubara

Minoru joined Resona Bank in April 1991 and was assigned to the Pensions Trust Management Department. Since then, he has been in charge of investment management, planning, and responsible investment management in the Investment Development Office and Public Fund Management Department, the Pensions Trust Management Department, the Trust Property Management Department, and so on. He has been in his current role since April 2020. In 2000 he was a visiting researcher in the Pensions Investment Management Center, and in 2005 he was a visiting researcher in the General Pensions Research Center. In the 21st century he has been co-chair of the Financial Conduct Regulations Management, Securities, and Investment Bank Working Group steering committee. He is a committee member of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) "Study Group for Dialogue for Creating Sustainable Corporate Value". He is also a member of the METI/Ministry of the Environment "Circular Economy and Plastic Resource Recycling Finance Study Group"; the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) "Biodiversity Strategy Study Group"; the MAFF "Food Supply Chain Decarbonization Study Group"; and the Ministry of the Environment "Environmentally Sustainable Company Selection Committee". He is also a planning committee member for the Cabinet Office on the issue of "Gender Investment Research".

He was born in 1961. He joined Sumitomo Trust Bank in 1983; and after gaining experience at the London branch, the Pension Fund Management, and other departments; he has been a part of the Planning Department since 2003. He led the build out of the Sustainability Department and has been supervising all of the group's sustainability operations since 2005. He has served as an Executive Fellow and the Chief Sustainability Officer since April 2018. During this time, he has developed the first ESG (SRI) fund for a corporate pension, built out environmental real estate operations, developed gerontology operations, and developed the world's first positive impact finance with no use of funds, among other activities. He served as the first Management Board Chairman for the Principles for Financial Action for the 21st Century in 2011 and is currently a member of the Management Board and the Sustainable Community Support Working Group Chair. He is also a part of the "ESG Regional Finance Task Force" and the "Positive Impact Finance Task Force" by the Ministry of the Environment and a member of the "Regional Revitalization SDG Finance Investigation and Research Committee" by the Cabinet Office, among other roles. He has co-authored "CSR Management and SRI," "Sustainable Real Estate," "Introduction to Natural Capital," and other works.

Yoshikatsu lectures at a variety of seminars and acts as spokesperson and influencer on social media, radio, and television shows. He has also published several books about seafood sustainability and Japan’s fish eating culture. His motto is “there will be more fish if we eat smarter.”
