Seafood production supports millions of people’s livelihoods and provides food for more than billions of people. Yet, environmental sustainability and social responsibility challenges exist throughout the global supply chains, such as food security, biodiversity conservation, stock management, counter-IUU fishing measures, and labor rights abuses. Japan, one of the major importers of seafood in the world, hosts the highest number of corporate headquarters among the top 100 international seafood companies. This panel discussion explores market-driven measures to address these challenges in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the responsible business framework with representatives from the government, intergovernmental organizations, and civil society.

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a serious threat to the sustainable use of marine resources and a shared challenge for the international community, as identified in SDGs 14.4. In response, the international community promotes countermeasures through the Port State Measures Agreement to Prevent Illegal Fishing (PSMA) and Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs). In addition, the world's three largest seafood import markets, the EU, the United States, and Japan, have implemented import regulations to prevent the market entry of seafood products derived from IUU fishing. To eradicate IUU fishing from the world's fisheries industry and protect legitimate producers and supply chains, what kind of international cooperation will be necessary in the future?

【Luncheon Session】 A Delicious Revolution - Chefs' Impact on the Future of our Ocean L-3

Watch Archived Video

Although the ocean is large, marine resources are not unlimited. Its fragility facing environmental changes and pressure from human activity is undeniable, and now 35.4% of fish stocks are overfished worldwide. Aquaculture may seem to be a part of the solution, but this sector also faces several issues before it can become sustainable. Overall, change must happen now. Since signing the Ethic Ocean charter in 2009, Relais & Châteaux has been committed to serving sustainable seafood. For this panel discussion, Relais & Châteaux chefs (Cédric Béchade of L’Auberge Basque, Shinobu Namae of L’Effervescence) join the director of NGO Ethic Ocean (Elisabeth Vallet) to dive into why there is urgency, the role that chefs play in defining the future of the food system, the opportunity to educate young hospitality professionals through culinary competitions (e.g. Olivier Roellinger Contest organized by Ethic Ocean in Europe and Japan) and how everyone can take a step in the right direction to change the world for the better—together.
